Meeting The Man Behind the Vision

1. How did you get inspired to become an entrepreneur, and what motivates you in life?
AM: My biggest inspiration comes from my family, especially my elder brother. Their support has always pushed me to think bigger about creating jobs for people and having a clear vision about my goals.

I’ve always been entrepreneurial by nature, but it’s really my family and close friends who kept me motivated all these years. They believe in what I’m doing, and that makes all the difference.

Apart from my family’s example, I find inspiration in reading stories of successful Indian business leaders and their ideas about business. When I was a young entrepreneur barely beginning my journey, two books that inspired me the most were “You Can Win” by Shiv Khera and “The High-Performance Entrepreneur” by Subroto Bagchi. I still sometimes read them again, whenever I get time.
2. How did your journey into online marketing and the SEO business begin?
AM: To be honest, I didn’t start with a strong interest in online marketing or the digital world. I entered the field by chance, but once I got involved, my curiosity grew rapidly. I made it a point to learn quickly and soon picked up skills in SEO, management, client relationships, project handling, budgeting, and communication. That’s when I began to truly enjoy the work and the opportunities this industry offers.
3. In your early career from 2004–2006 at Zunch Communications-USA, how did your experience as a Link Building Expert and Manager of Indian SEO and Web Development Operations influence your journey as an entrepreneur?
AM: During my time at Zunch Communications from 2004 to 2006, I gained hands-on experience in link building and managing SEO and web development operations. I also picked up technical expertise in keyword research, technical SEO recommendations, team management, and client management. This gave me a clear view of how rapidly the digital marketing industry was growing and the significant impact SEO could have on businesses.

At the time, the online business in India was still in its early stages, with many new opportunities opening up. The confidence I built in my role, along with the growth I saw in the industry, encouraged me to think about how I could have a bigger impact on the field.
4. What gave you the confidence to start your company back in 2004?
AM: In 2004, I got an opportunity to handle a few important SEO projects from companies I had worked with earlier. They liked my approach and trusted me to deliver results. That gave me the confidence to start my own company. I also wanted to create a workplace where people could get good employment and build strong skills in SEO and digital marketing. At that time, many foreign clients were looking for affordable SEO services, and India was the right place for them to invest. So, it was a win-win situation for all. The same motivation to create value for clients continues to drive me even today.
5. What were the first few years of SEOTonic like, especially in terms of clients and funding?
AM: We started operations in 2005 and registered SEOTonic as a Private Limited Company in 2007. By then, we had already built good relationships with several companies through our earlier work, which helped us get clients in the beginning. Many of them were expanding and needed SEO for multiple websites, so that gave us a steady base to grow. We never raised external funding. Our growth was organic, and we reinvested the revenue from our clients back into the business. This way, we stayed lean, stable, and focused as we scaled in time.
6. What was the founding vision of SEOTonic, and how did you grow in the initial days?
AM: From the very beginning, our vision has been simple: ‘Client satisfaction is our ultimate goal’. We believed that if we kept our clients happy, their trust and word-of-mouth referrals would help us grow. That approach worked well for us. Paradoxically, as a marketing company, we never had to depend much on marketing, as our work itself brought us new contacts and projects. I think this happened because we focused on ethics, transparency, and building trustworthy relationships with our clients.
7. How does SEOTonic reflect your personal values or philosophy about business?
AM: See, I believe in having complete honesty in business…and we have always worked with this philosophy in mind. In SEO and digital marketing, achieving the promised results is very important, so we always try to under-promise and over-deliver. This way, clients get a clear picture without false expectations, and we remain honest about what is possible. Providing affordable and complete services with this approach has helped many clients build a strong online presence and grow.

In the end, I feel that being honest, transparent, and client-focused has shaped my way of doing business and has been the key to both our clients’ success and our own growth as a company.
8. When you started SEOTonic, people didn’t know much about SEO. What challenges did you face in the early years, and how did you overcome them?
AM: Ah, yes, we faced some challenges. We had to provide newly hired team members with rigorous training, and developing their skills took time since SEO was relatively new in India. We were also constantly adapting to new methods and technological changes, which kept us on our toes. To keep the team motivated, we offered incentives and skill development opportunities.

Convincing companies about the importance of SEO was not too difficult, as most were interested in exploring our services and investing in digital marketing. As the field grew rapidly, our primary focus was to develop an efficient system that could handle a large number of projects. Over time, we have learned a great deal and consistently delivered good results at every stage. SEOTonic began to be recognized among the top names in the field, which helped us attract talent and improve our effectiveness as an SEO agency from India.
9. When did you first feel confident that SEOTonic would succeed?
AM: It’s difficult to pinpoint a specific day or event. Even during the early years, while we were training our team and setting up systems to handle multiple projects, I felt confident that we were on the right path. We were getting regular work orders from clients, and our name was starting to be recognized. I always believed in the company’s vision and the growing importance of SEO in a digital world. My focus was on building a talented team and delivering good results, and I knew that success would follow naturally.

At the same time, with the growing Indian market, we are working to increase our presence and capture a larger share here over the next few years. 13. What motivates you to work in the SEO domain?
AM: What motivates me is seeing the results: achieving first-page rankings for important keywords, making brands popular through social media optimisation, and delivering maximum ROI with PPC campaigns. The success of our clients and the trust they place in our services inspire me to do better every day. Even after nearly 19 years, I still wake up with the same enthusiasm, driven by the people I work with and the clients we serve.

SEO is fast-changing and dynamic, so there are always challenges to solve and new technologies to keep up with. My team’s energy and dedication also motivate me, as their enthusiasm keeps me on my toes. Looking back, I could not have chosen a better field, since we are making a real, tangible impact on businesses and lives.
14. How important is SEO for businesses today, and can they afford to ignore it?
AM: SEO is essential for any business looking to drive online sales and establish strong brand value. It is the foundation of online presence, and over the years, competition for visibility has increased significantly. In this challenging and competitive field, businesses need to partner with the right SEO experts who have a long-term vision, or they risk losing opportunities that ultimately their competitors will capture.

Ignoring SEO is not an option for any business; in every cost-benefit scenario, SEO and digital marketing remain important enablers of growth, provided the strategy used is the right one. The techniques we use continue to evolve, but SEO remains a key factor in achieving online success.
15. According to you, what are the major issues companies face in SEO and digital marketing, and how can SEOTonic help?
AM: The major issue is not getting the expected results. Companies set certain expectations, but many agencies fail to deliver accordingly. Not setting the right expectations from the beginning is preparing for failure. While I view this primarily as a communications issue, factors such as over-promising and under-delivering, or making incorrect strategic decisions regarding budgets and planning, can also contribute to this unwanted outcome. As a result, many clients lose faith in SEO.

Also, while the value of good SEO is tremendous, some businesses go to agencies that offer cheap plans and promise great results in an attempt to save money. These companies often use black-hat techniques, which can eventually lead to penalties or loss of visibility in search results, harming the business in the long run.

SEOTonic takes a different approach. We provide clients with a clear and realistic picture, propose rates based on the actual expected effort, and deliver advanced SEO services. AM: In my view, one of the most challenging aspects of SEO is the constant stream of algorithm updates, which keeps us on our toes. To stay ahead, we need to remain vigilant, continuously test strategies, and quickly adapt to each change. Another challenge is striking the right balance between user intent and keyword optimization. Clients often expect rapid results, but ethical SEO rules out any black-hat shortcuts. This means we must move quickly, whether it involves implementing SEO recommendations, resolving technical audit issues, or creating high-quality backlinks and content that deliver tangible results.

A big threat to any business is facing issues like de-ranking or penalties from search platforms. This becomes quite a challenge for everyone. Dealing with these situations requires careful consideration, swift actions, and expertise. Thus, I always advise businesses to avoid taking any short-cuts in SEO altogether.
17. How do you stay up to date with the latest trends in SEO?
AM: I regularly follow updates in the SEO industry and conduct research around our activities. My team undergoes continuous technical upskilling, and I encourage everyone to experiment and innovate with technology. There are a few companies that excel in SEO research, and I combine their insights with our practical experience to deliver better results and service packages, helping businesses overcome challenges and stay ahead of the curve.

I also invest significantly in tools and applications that make our work more efficient while keeping a close watch on any disruptions in the field. While some advocate for the rapid automation of services, I believe that striking a balance between automation and human expertise yields the best results over the long term.
18. How do you see AI changing SEO and marketing, and how is SEOTonic adapting to these changes?
AM: We are among the first companies to start implementing AI recommendations on websites. AI is not that different from traditional SEO; you still need to build website authority, rank well organically, and increase organic traffic. The top websites in organic searches are also appearing in AI-powered search results. There are certain recommendations that every online business needs to implement on its website to be visible in AI searches. Beyond that, the fast pace of AI advancement will surely make waves in the digital world over the next few years. We are prepared for it. SEO has always been a technical field, and with AI, that will not change.
19. What is your view on the future of the SEO industry, both in India and globally? And what role do you see SEOTonic playing in this future?
AM: SEO is quite a dynamic field; it will remain integral and continue to be a major force in the online business domain. Even with the latest changes related to AI and AI-LLMs in search, the core principles of search remain the same. A solid SEO foundation is crucial for visibility in AI-driven search results.

More businesses in India are focusing on developing a local-first approach, not just within India but globally. The “glocal” model ensures that Local SEO plays a significant role in the future. Additionally, social media marketing, brand promotions, and sales are becoming increasingly important. This area still holds substantial untapped potential in both Indian and international markets.

As these services expand, SEOTonic aims to tap into these emerging opportunities while strengthening its core technical SEO services. AM: It’s the opportunity to help businesses grow and to win new projects every day. My drive to take SEOTonic to the top of the SEO industry is the same as it was on day one. The only difference is that our goals have grown bigger with each passing year.
22. Did you have any mentors, and what is the most valuable lesson they taught you?
AM: One of my mentors, whom I am truly grateful for, is Mohammad Shabir, and whatever I have achieved so far is mainly because of him. He is an expert in SEO and a successful entrepreneur himself, heading SEO Valley, a well-known firm in India. He taught me the importance of good client communication and client satisfaction, which today are two strong pillars of SEOTonic’s success.

AM: From the feedback we receive, our clients value the way we work closely with them to solve their problems and provide practical solutions. They appreciate that we don’t make promises we cannot keep; instead, we set realistic expectations so they always have a clear picture of the KPIs. 24. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this industry?
AM: Be patient and optimize your own website properly. Don’t get involved in cold calling or spamming; it’s not going to give you any substantial business. Work to improve the technical aspects of your digital assets, do not run after quick fixes, and do not give up hope after a few months of trying. Prepare for a long run, and you will see growth and the numbers trickling down. In time, small repeated actions will turn into a powerful stream of results and then into a river, so be patient and work on your foundations.
25. Is there one thing you hope to change or improve in the world through this business?
AM: International Trade. I always dream of India becoming a global economic powerhouse. We have the numbers, the demography, the intelligence, and the good business sense that could help us play a central role in global business growth. Robust international trade will help India improve its standing in the world and become a global business leader. Therefore, I am always grateful to our clients from around the globe for showing confidence in us and opening their doors to new possibilities of cooperation and collaboration. This is a great, mutually beneficial relationship opportunity for India and the world, and therefore, I find myself lucky to be a small contributing agent to this grander vision of India.
26. How do you keep yourself engaged and entertained beyond work?
AM: I’ve always had a soft spot for cricket. The patience of great players and their attention to detail are what keep me hooked. The same values and a love for detail spill over into the rest of my life.

I also spend a lot of time diving into articles and blogs, especially when they explore technology, big ideas, or how the world is changing. Lately, AI has been the topic I keep coming back to. It’s not just another tech trend to me. It feels like one of the most powerful forces of our time, reshaping the future in real-time. I follow its developments closely and think about both the exciting possibilities and the challenges it brings.

When I’m not reading or exploring new ideas, I’m usually traveling to attend conferences and listening to podcasts that make me see the world from a fresh angle. For me, it all connects. Whether it’s a cricket match, an article that makes me think, or a conversation on a long train ride, it’s about staying curious, open-minded, and inspired.
27. What message would you like to give young people starting their careers in the SEO & Marketing Industry?
AM: The future looks very promising. The next generation gives me great hope for where we are heading as a nation. At SEOTonic, we carry that same forward momentum. My message to you and the industry is- “Inaction leads to stagnation- so keep up the curiosity and a healthy learning attitude. Always plan for the long term and break it down into small achievable targets.”
